It was unacceptable for the social psychologist to scare the subjects of his experiment. But unethical would have been actually treating them with an electric shock without actually informing them about the matter. Although lying is an unethical task when thought about it. But an actual lack of ethics would have been the administration of electric shocks without the prior informed consent of those apparently participating. The concept of humanistic psychology tells us that humans have free will and they practice it consciously.
